Valentines Day (Kid's project)

Hi everyone... it's been a LONG time....so I'll just jump right into it.

My Boppa is now at the age where she is aware of Holidays. You may remember last year when we made an Easter Egg Mobile. This is very similar. This craft literally cost me $1.00.

SUPPLIES:

Heart Doilies from the Dollar Tree

Acrylic Paint in 3 colors

paint brushes

Scrapbook paper

Extra Frame (I used an 8x10)

The Boppa and i started out picking our colors and laying out the hearts out on the table.

We painted them how we wanted them and then once they were dry we laid them under a book to stop them from curling.

Then she picked out some scrapbook paper and cut it to size. After attaching some yarn to the hearts we made holes in the paper. I followed "the Boppa's" instructions on this matter but you can certainly even out the spaces if you were to do this on your own.

We are so happy with the results and used the extra hearts to decorate our windows. This took us about 3 hours in total but did it over two days so the paint could dry totally.

Preview of things to come

Last week my Boppa and I were out of town so didn't get to craft but we did start on our next project.....

... turning that old box (we are talking over 30 years old) into Boppa's new craft box... because EVERY GIRL NEEDS A CRAFT BOX right? We pulled on the blue vinyl off the box (and it's wood!!!) the other day, she picked out some scrapbook paper and we are going to Modge Podge it on sometime this week! I really can't wait.

Crafts with kids

I have made it a goal to try and do crafts and things with my daughter at least once a week. Preschool seems to be out of the question for us (way too much money to go private) and we don't qualify for public so I want to try to take some time out of each week and work on some things with her. With Easter coming up I thought it would be fun to do an Egg Mobile. So I went on-line and typed in Easter Color pages and eggs and came out with 3 different sizes.

She colored them in on both sides and I cut them out for her.

I made this ring out of some extra cardboard I had (from other scrapbook purchases) by using 2 plates of different sizes. I punched holes in it and added the eggs to the holes with some left over yarn I had from yet another scrap-book project.

FINAL RESULT:

She was so excited to show her daddy. We hung it up in her room and she loves pointing it out to me. Definitely going to repeat this one with other holidays!

Better late than never....

Halloween Wreath

With September being only 1 month away and Costco already selling Christmas stuff, I thought it was OK to start on some Holiday crafts. I did some of these last year too and really like the way they add to the Holiday spirit. This one is for a friends wedding. I liked getting decor stuff as a wedding gift. It instantly adds a spirit to the home that I enjoy. I'm hoping my friend will like this (I made her something else too so I'm not totally going Scrooge on her)Also, before I go on to the tutorial, I wanted to apologize for the out-of-focus pictures. I have been having camera issues and the camera Korie gave me, I dropped on the floor and now it won't work so the camera issues continue... Anyway;

Like I said, I did these last year but didn't really add the tutorial. You will need around 400-500 strips of paper. It sounds like a lot until you consider that each piece of 12x12 will yield you around 24 strips. So that is about 16-20 pieces of 12x12. The idea is to use multiples of the same paper. In this project I used 4 pieces of the same patterned paper. Cut the 12x12 into 6x1 inch strips.

I cut them out and lay them out to wait for the next step
You can do as many different patterns as you want, I suggest adding in some solids throughout the wreath to even out the business. I find that packs work best for his kind of craft as the manufacturer already put in the time to make everything match.
After all the strips are cut up, you need to staple each strip at the ends. This can be monotonous so I find that doing this project in front of the TV helps.


I also find that if I break them down into manageable piles then I can get through them easier.


As I staple them, they go into a box or bag for safe keeping. My daughter could make a huge mess with these!!
I used a standard 10 inch wreath for this project, you can go as big or as small as you would like (obviously) you would just need to adjust the amount of paper and if you went smaller I would go 4x1.

Once everything is cut and stapled the only thing left is attaching them to the form. When I read about this project in Creating Keepsakes, the person glue-gunned hers on. This didn't work for me, so I went to straight pins. You can buy a box of straight pins at Walmart for less than 2 dollars. I would also recommend buying a thimble as the constant pushing in of the pins gets hard on your finger. I also found that the white styrofoam ones are easier to push into but since that's not what I had on hand and money is tight, I went with what I had.

All in all, this project took 2 nights - once the strips start going on it's pretty easy to do. Just remember your thimble!!!

Recipe Magnet Board

I have had some need to make gifts for people recently. I have seen these magnet boards used for all types of things, from message board to picture frames. I love the idea of usind these in the kitchen as a holder for recipes. When ever I use a recipe card or a book, it always ends up with gunk all over it because an egg smear went across it or I put my spoon down on it. With these, the recipes are up and off the counter.

I bought these boards pre-made and the bend was already in them when I got them. They were pretty reasonable at 4 dollars a piece. (If you wan the link, please leave a request in the comments section and I'll get it to you) In addition to the board I bought some buttons to put over the magnets to make them pretty. Everything else I had on-hand.

This is the beginning product. I got 3 with 3 magnets and shipping for 25 bucks.
I choose my paper, accesories and buttons.
I used Beacon's 3 in 1 Advanced craft Glue

If you haven't used this, it's awesome! I have used it in all kinds of papercrafts, and even though it has a bit of a smell to it, it has worked fantasticly for me! I tried using a glue gun, but it just didn't work with the metal, I don't know if this is because you have to buy a special glue for the glue gun but it didn't work.
I covered the metal with my paper of choice, for this example it was Basil Basics Black. I put the glue on the metal, all the way around, you have to sort of rub the glue in certain areas to make it stick, but once it grabs hold it's good forever!
I have had this cute American Crafts paper for ever and have never been able to cut it up because I have loved the flowers so much. This particular person has a black and white kitchen so I thought this was a great way to add a punch of color without going over board. So I cut the flowers out of the paper and stuck them on with regular glue.
I used a glue gun to attach these silver button covers (from Walmart $1.27 for 4)to the magnets and to secure down the ribbon.

This was done with paper by g c d studios (called large tulips), the buttons are from walmart and the ribbon is American crafts. Letter is the Tear Drop Cartridge from Cricut.

Lost Socks

I have been working on this project for a while... not that it's hard, it just I got distracted, went on vacation, wondered about what I should add.... etc. So this is a gift for a good friend of mine who just had a baby girl last month.

I got the square from the dollar tree (for $1!) The paper is DCWV pack that I bought for my daughters scrapbook use. I edged the corners with the tea die distress ink.

This is a pretty low cost project... I think all together it cost less than 5 bucks, including the socks!

I haven't posted in a while... I got caught up on a family project, that unfortunatly I didn't get pictures of... but it did get me back in the mood to scrapbook. This is a page I have been wanting to do for a while and found some inspiration in a recent scrapbook magazine.
I used Bazil Basics for the white, the polk-a-dot and pink striped pictures are from DCWV, their Nursery Collection. The Lettering was plain brown that I painted black with acrylic paint.

Advent Calender 2

I have to admit that I went at little advent calender crazy this year. They remind me of Christmas as a child. I have posted both calenders on this blog, this one I am hoping to use as a scripture advent. I will print off some quotes, scriptures etc. about the Christmas season and put one in each drawer. The other (click here) will be used for the sweet part of christmas, filled with chocolate and fun little treats!

I like most crafty, scrapbooky people subscribe to a number of Scrapbook magazines and in every one from about October to December I saw this...

and a few example of different people's versions of their advent calenders.

So when I got some Christmas money and Scrapbook.com FINALLY got them in stock I pounced...I also ordered some cute non traditional Christmas paper and then stalked my mailbox until it all finally came.

I started out using the non-traditional stuff, (I won't list the brand because it's cute and I don't want to slam it) however I found that I had cut all the squares out and attached them that they didn't mesh well and I wanted something more traditional after all.

So I had purchased some Making Memories Scrapbook paper (http://www.makingmemories.com/Products/detail/fa-la-la-paper) at Michaels and picked up a multi-paper pack at Target that matched to work on my other advent calender and to scrap our daughters Christmas pictures. I had a lot left over so I used what was left over as well as some Making Memorie Emblishments to make my advent calender.

I'll say that alot of the other calenders I have seen on online galleries such as
scrapbook.com are a lot more elaborate than mine, however, I wanted something that could be easily stored so that I wouldn't have to wrap it, or worry about it getting torn or broken while being moved.

So, I have had these pictures from A Mary Engelbreit calender for a long LONG time. At least 7 years. So when I went to the Dollar Tree and found these wood plaques, I knew exactly how I could use them....

I painted them each with black craft paint. Each plaque needed 3 coats. I'm not sure I had the best paint so just paint to your desired coverage.

After letting the paint dry overnight, I attached the pictures with some stick glue and then modged podged over the paper. You can use your desired finish. I used a mat finish....When Christmas rolls around again I plan on hanging them together on another piece of finished wood where I can transfer out the plaques based on the holiday.... just haven't gotten that far yet...

New Layout

I have had this idea for a while and finally tracked down some paper I love to do it with. This is from SEI's Petals and Paisley collection which has been out a while but I love it just the same.

Advent Calender....

I know it's a little late for Christmas Crafts but after Christmas sales are so good that I decided to wait for them to get the supplies....
I only have about half of it done at this point but I thought I would share what I have....









I'm doing it in shifts so to speak due to our tight budget. These were done with Memory Makers paper. All the numbers came on one sheet so I cut them out individually and glued them on the paper mache boxes. The plan is to then by some magnet strip and a large cookie sheet and attach the boxes to the sheet and hang the sheet either on the wall or on a door from a wreth hanger....

I just got 4 more, so I will work on them tonight and add pictures tomorrow.

They still need to be modged-podged to insure the number paper will stay on. Pin It
